LARC - LFV Aviation Research Center

A research arena embedded at Örnsköldsvik Aiport for collaboration between industry, academia and society in air traffic management, airport operations, electric aviation and airspace issues. The arena works strategically in the fields of environmental monitoring, research coordination, knowledge dissemination, arena development/planning and seminar activities. Through broad collaborative projects, LARC helps improve regional and national conditions for the development of industry and social operations - always with aviation as the starting point.

Research in real environments

The partners - LFV, Örnsköldsvik Airport, Åsele näringslivsstiftelse and Storumans kommunföretag AB - aim to provide a research cluster where validations and demonstrations in real environments and with challenges in real conditions produce world-class research.

The arena works strategically in the fields of environmental monitoring, research coordination, knowledge dissemination, arena development/planning and seminar activities.

It creates opportunities for industry, academia and society to interact in the fields of air traffic management, airport operations, electric aviation and airspace issues.

How LARC started

In Örnsköldsvik, world-class research is conducted to develop solutions for challenges in safety, capacity, sustainability and cost-efficiency - improving tomorrow's aviation. LARC was founded in 2015 when Örnsköldsvik Airport became the first airport in the world to be digitally managed from Sundsvall. The following year, the initial project was generated from a new regulatory framework requiring signalling systems for access to the runway to avoid trespassing. Collaboration between LFV, Örnsköldsvik Airport and Swedavia led to a digital system for airside vehicles, DRIWS.

In 2018, the Autotomated Vechicles for Airports (AVAP) project was launched, focusing on developing self-driving vehicles for ploughing, sweeping and mowing at airports. VINNOVA and the Swedish Transport Administration funded the establishment of the research arena, a mission that was completed in 2021.
