Växjö Airport is owned and run by a municipal and county council owned company called Växjö Flygplatsbolag AB and was opened in the autumn of 1975. Until January 1993 air traffic services were provided by AFIS personnel employed by Flygplatsbolaget.Between 1993 and 2004 services during the day were provided by air traffic control personnel and at night, and during Saturday and Sunday mornings by AFIS personnel.

From summer of 2004 AFIS ceased and now all air traffic services are provided by 6 air traffic controllers employed by LFV. Regular services are provided by SAS to Stockholm Arlanda and other destinations. Flysmaland offers services to Stockholm Bromma, Berlin and Vilnius and Ryanair fly to Dusseldorf/Weeze. Charter services are available during the summer and winter season with varying frequency and destinations include Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Canary Islands, Egypt and Thailand.

Postal flights depart every night for Stockholm Arlanda and the Airport is also used by taxi companies, aero clubs and fire-fighting aircraft as well as helicopter companies inspecting forests and carrying out power cable work.
