Stockholm-Arlanda

In the beginning of the 1960’s Arlanda was opened to receive public air traffic. Just over two years later all international traffic was moved from Bromma to Arlanda and in April 1962 the official opening of Arlanda took place.
Air traffic management was initially conducted from a provisional tower located near the runway. In 1964 a new tower was brought into service and was in use until the end of 2001.
The new tower at Arlanda was opened for service on 23 December 2001. It is 83 metres high and offers a fantastic view over the surrounding area. Technologically the tower was one of the most advanced air traffic management towers in the world and is equipped with, amongst other things, the new advanced surface movement radar. The number of personnel working in the tower is 60, 50 of which are air traffic controllers and 10 are assistant air traffic controllers.

The new tower has 9 work stations for air traffic control personnel, two positions are used to guide traffic onto the runways, three to take care of ground movements and the remaining are used in management and support functions.
