The tower was officially opened in 1990 and only ATC services were provided at that time. In 1999 a flying school for students attending upper secondary school was opened in Arvidsjaur and at the same time TIZ/TIA was also introduced. During the first training course only AFIS services were available but from the autumn of 2000 an ATC was opened. Services available today include ATC from Monday to Friday, 08.00-17.00 and AFIS covering mornings, evenings and weekends.

There are 14 C172’s and approximately 50 students at the flying school, which means periods of intensive traffic.
During 2006 the flying school experienced 21,000 landings!
Scheduled traffic to and from Stockholm-Arlanda occurs 3 times a day, Monday to Friday with 2 services on Saturday and Sunday. In addition during the winter season, charter services and automobile test operations account for 3 flights to and from Germany on Mondays and Fridays as well as one service to and from Copenhagen (SAS).
